IndoTeak Design Reclaimed Teak Floors

Our favourite eco pick from Surfaces 2012 was FCS recycled teak solid and engineered hardwood flooring by IndoTeak Design.

All of the teak wood is reclaimed by hand from historic buildings and old fishing boats from Indonesia. They also make sure that all adhesives and special finishes are formaldehyde and VOC free. Naturally weathered over time, the hand selected teak wood has stunning colour variations that result in a truly unique and special floor.

Peridot Vancouver in the South Granville shopping district is a unique boutique store with hundreds of home décor items that will make you Ohhh! and Ahhh! with delight. Recently, they closed their store for four days while they renovated their space and welcomed new eco floors, not to mention a whole new inventory, just in time for the holidays!

The owners picked Europlex VinylCork click floating floor in Swiss Alpine for the two-story space because of its durability, low maintenance and sustainability. We also installed a custom stain matched stair nosing to match the new floors. We even recreated the distressed look on the front bull nose to make it look exactly like the floors – now that’s attention to detail!

The Eco Floor Store will supply a Cork ReHarvest cork recycling dropbox for the event. Make sure to bring your used corks and stick them in the box near the entrance for proper recycling. With all those wine drinkers, we’re sure to collect hundreds – and hopefully thousands – of corks!

- Approximately 6.6 million acres of Mediterranean cork forest extend across Portugal, Spain, Algeria, Morocco, Italy, Tunisia and France.  These oak forests support one of the world’s highest levels of forest biodiversity, second only to the Amazonian Rainforest.

- Trees are not cut down to harvest cork, rather, the bark is stripped by hand every 9-12 years. Cork oak trees can live up to 300 years!

- Cork is a 100%  natural, renewable, recyclable and biodegradable material that is obtained through an environmentally friendly harvesting process.

- Opting for screw caps and plastic stoppers directly causes the loss of sustainable livelihoods as the cork forests are a vital source of income for thousands of families.

- In comparison to a natural cork, 24 times more greenhouse gasses are released and over and 10 times more energy is used when making one screw cap.

- Plastic closures are made from petro-chemicals, are not biodegradable and are rarely recycled. They are not sourced from a sustainable product and produce 10 times more greenhouse gasses than natural cork to produce.
