Dunlin Shore by Balandra Development

Posted on February 28, 2012 by Jared

We’re proud to be part of one of Richmond’s most anticipated and recently completed green homes!

The Dunlin Shore by Balandra Development is located on Richmond’s west waterfront and has gorgeous views of Sturgeon Banks. The beautifully designed 3,400 square foot home features a variety of building technologies and products that make it one of the most energy efficient homes in the Lower Mainland – including environmentally friendly flooring by The Eco Floor Store.

In the main living area, we supplied and installed over 1,300 square feet of our popular FSC Certified Ernest Hemingway ® engineered hardwood floors. The Dunlin Shore’s interior designers selected the colour San Cristobal in the Old Havana Collection, an elegant dark-stained maple with 4 ¾” wide planks, artisan hand scraped finishing and pillowed edges.

In addition to being FSC Certified, Ernest Hemingway floors also:

+ qualify for LEED™ credits

+ are C.A.R.B Certified

+ and comply with the Lacey Act.

The Eco Floor Store also supplied and installed flooring for the staircase in the great room. They feature custom white risers with subtle recessed lighting every few steps. In the 550 square foot garage, we supplied and installed Pro-Garage flooring.

The Dunlin Shore is aiming for Platinum Level 82 EnerGuide rating. Read about all of the other green features of the home here.

Peridot Decorative Homewear in Vancouver, BC now boasts of new inventory and new floors!

Peridot Vancouver in the South Granville shopping district is a unique boutique store with hundreds of home décor items that will make you Ohhh! and Ahhh! with delight. Recently, they closed their store for four days while they renovated their space and welcomed new eco floors, not to mention a whole new inventory, just in time for the holidays!

The owners picked Europlex VinylCork click floating floor in Swiss Alpine for the two-story space because of its durability, low maintenance and sustainability. We also installed a custom stain matched stair nosing to match the new floors. We even recreated the distressed look on the front bull nose to make it look exactly like the floors – now that’s attention to detail!

Are You in the Dark About Vapour?

Posted on February 25, 2011 by Jared

What is a vapour barrier? And more importantly, why do you need it?

Vapour barrier is simply described as a diaper for your flooring, but it’s not really for your flooring and I guess it’s not really holding anything in, it’s more for keeping stuff out. So I guess a vapour barrier is better described as a sheet of plastic (sometimes attached to a foam underlayment) that is used to protect your new floor against moisture from your installation surface (in most case, concrete).

Concrete has a bad habit of sweating. (So do I, if you want the truth!) When this happens, the vapour barrier acts as a protective sheet against water penetrating or impregnating your finished flooring surface.

Basically, as a simple rule of thumb, if you’re installing flooring over concrete, you should use a vapour barrier. There are exceptions to every rule of course, so if you’re in doubt, contact a licensed contractor or flooring expert (like me) to give you the full low down on your sub floor requirements prior to flooring installation.
