Stick a Cork in It!

Posted on August 19, 2011 by Jared

That’s right: stick a cork in it!

Join us on September 30, 2011 at the Fraser Valley Cork & Keg Wine and Beer Festival at the Langley Events Centre. Enjoy an evening with friends while you discover international and local wines, craft and premium beers. There will also be artisan cheese, homemade chocolate and delicious local fare to sample.

Cork Reharvest - Cork RecyclingYou might be wondering: How does a flooring store get involved with a wine and beer festival? Good question!

The Eco Floor Store will supply a Cork ReHarvest cork recycling dropbox for the event. Make sure to bring your used corks and stick them in the box near the entrance for proper recycling. With all those wine drinkers, we’re sure to collect hundreds – and hopefully thousands – of corks!

Cork Forest Conservation Alliance

The Cork Forest Conservation Alliance (CFCA) is a non-profit organization that campaigns for the protection and preservation of the Mediterranean cork forests through education, partnerships and its cork recycling program. Visit for more info.

Quick Cork Facts
Source: Cork ReHarvest

– Approximately 6.6 million acres of Mediterranean cork forest extend across Portugal, Spain, Algeria, Morocco, Italy, Tunisia and France.  These oak forests support one of the world’s highest levels of forest biodiversity, second only to the Amazonian Rainforest.

– Trees are not cut down to harvest cork, rather, the bark is stripped by hand every 9-12 years. Cork oak trees can live up to 300 years!

– Cork is a 100%  natural, renewable, recyclable and biodegradable material that is obtained through an environmentally friendly harvesting process.

– Opting for screw caps and plastic stoppers directly causes the loss of sustainable livelihoods as the cork forests are a vital source of income for thousands of families.

– In comparison to a natural cork, 24 times more greenhouse gasses are released and over and 10 times more energy is used when making one screw cap.

– Plastic closures are made from petro-chemicals, are not biodegradable and are rarely recycled. They are not sourced from a sustainable product and produce 10 times more greenhouse gasses than natural cork to produce.
